What is the proper way to speak English? That all depends on context! Using formal English grammar in a cover letter when applying for a professional job may help you land an interview, but it won't likely win you friends at a party. In this session we use the tools of linguistics (the scientific study of language) to discuss the importance of understanding both standard and non-standard dialects of English.
