The Art of Environmental Protection in Today’s Society
ENVR2900 Topics in Environmental Studies

Adequately protecting the natural environment in today’s society is very challenging and sometimes controversial. Although the elements of environmental protection are largely based on the physical and biological sciences, there is also an art involved. Knowing what tools are available and how/when to use them will largely determine the success or failure of environmental policies and initiatives. This 14-week class course will investigate the various tools government regulators and non-profit organizations frequently use in their attempt to attain an environment that is clean, sustainable, and adequately protects the public’s health.   Through the use of case examples, students will assess the strengths, weaknesses, and effectiveness of various tools regulators and NGOs have historically used in their attempt to achieve environmental protection.  Students will also explore the likelihood of traditional (and perhaps new)  regulatory tools being effective in meeting future environmental challenges.
