The Security and Resilience program hosts a speaker series annually. This year’s series, “Contemporary Issues in Security and Resilience Studies” features speakers from in and out of the university on a variety of topics. September 21: Samuel V. Scarpino

Samuel V. Scarpino is the Director of AI + Life Sciences at Northeastern University and a Professor of the Practice in Health and Computer Sciences. He holds appointments in the Institute for Experiential AI and the Network Science, Global Resilience, and Roux Institutes. Scarpino’s talk is titled “Preventing Pandemics Before There’s a Vaccine.”

October 12: Kjell Brataas

Kjell Brataas is an experienced crisis communication consultant and author from Norway who has handled large crises such as the tsunami in Asia and the terror attacks in Oslo and on Utoya. Brataas has published two books about crisis communication. Brataas's talk is titled "Responding to Disasters and Attacks at Mass Crowds."

November 9: Corrine Bowers

Corinne Bowers studies the impacts of flooding and extreme weather events, particularly the damages that extreme events cause to the built environment, and how those damages are projected to change in a warming climate. Bower’s talk is titled “Compound climate extremes: What are they and why do they matter?”

December 7: David Lazer

David Lazer is University Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Computer Sciences, Northeastern University. He has published prominent work on computational social science, misinformation, democratic deliberation, collective intelligence, and algorithmic auditing. Lazer's talk is titled "(Dis)Trust in America."
