Toys That Listen: How New Internet-Connected Devices Impact Our Privacy

Speaker: Emily McReynolds, JD, Program Director for the Technology Policy Lab at the University of Washington

As people and companies bring more devices that are “always on” into homes and workplaces, thus far there has been limited research into these systems’ capabilities with their implications for privacy.  The introduction of the Amazon Echo, Google Home, and other similar products have demonstrated the growing misunderstanding regarding these device’s capabilities and whether to trust them.  For example, “Can an Echo Testify Against You?” and  “Google Home Ends a Domestic Dispute by Calling the Police.”

In this presentation, Emily McReynolds will discuss the privacy and policy impacts of these technologies based on research done at the University of Washington Tech Policy Lab.

About the Speaker

Emily McReynolds is the Program Director for the Technology Policy Lab.  A collaboration between the University of Washington's School of Law, Information School, and Paul G. She is the current Co-Chair of the Washington State Access to Justice Board Technology Committee where she has directed projects on access to electronic records and worked to convene technologists and lawyers in a Tech Symposium.

Prior to the Tech Policy Lab and receiving her JD, McReynolds spent a number of years working with foundations on their grant making processes and with NGO's focused on corporate social responsibility.
