The NU Writing Center is thrilled to sponsor this writing workshop February 14-18 for NU faculty, staff, students, and the community at large. Workshops are free, open to the public, and welcome writers of all levels and disciplines.

Description: In this writing workshop, we will be discussing the disgregated sensory faculties and the means for transcribing their impressions, eschewing formal unities. We will consider how syntax orders the phenomenological in neat grammatical linearities, suggestive of and assuming causes and effects. We will practice disordering these grammatics through creative writing prompts. We will contrast the notion of a background matrix that conditions emergence, serving as a sort of wasteland of the nascent, with ideas of relational immanence. We will consider what it means to be an ethical writer, in the Spinozan sense, becoming investigators of fluxing, polymorphic becoming.

I will provide readings and viewings covering a variety of genres of expression, as well as slides providing the background to and for our phenomenological investigations. We will consider spatial orientations and how the philosophy of Spinoza influenced the work of Clarice Lispector. How or does experience crystallize through transcription? What are the limits of linguistic expression and how can we compromise them, to come tumbling through them?

Facilitator bio: Albrecht Jesse K Baer received his MFA from Brown University in 2017. He was born in Georgia and grew up beneath southern power plants. He is the author of the chapbooks Holodeck One with Magic Helicopter Press and At One End with Essay Press as well as the collection Midwestern Infinity Doctrine with Apocalypse Party. He has been included in journals such as Prelude, Pinwheel, Bathhouse, Baest, The Tiny, and Bone Bouquet. He loves horses.
