DESCRIPTION:Kellee Tsai\, Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humani
 ties at Northeastern University\, will share her insights and research on 
 “party-state capitalism” in China. While China's state has always play
 ed a core role in development\, prioritization of growth has shifted to a 
 variant of state capitalism best described as “party-state capitalism\,
 ” which emphasizes risk management and leadership by the Chinese Communi
 st Party. This transition to party-state capitalism emerged from a combina
 tion of perceived domestic and external threats\, with consequences for co
 ntemporary dynamics in global capitalism.\n\n \n\nThis event is open to al
 l students\, faculty members\, staff\, and members of the greater Boston c
 ommunity. Lunch provided\, registration required.\n\n \n\nThis event is pa
 rt of the Nardone Family Seminar Series at the Center for Emerging Markets
 .\n\n \n\n \n\nAbout Kellee Tsai\n\nKellee Tsai\, PhD\, became the new Dea
 n of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities on February 26\, 2024. 
 Her career spans leadership roles in higher education\, most recently as d
 ean of the School of Humanities and Social Science and Chair Professor of 
 Social Science at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. At Hong 
 Kong University of Science and Technology\, Dean Tsai served as associate 
 director of the Center for AI Research and founding director of the center
 's AI Ethics and Governance Lab\, where she brought the social sciences an
 d humanities into conversations on ethical uses for AI. \n\n \n\nPreviousl
 y she spent thirteen years at Johns Hopkins University\, as a Professor of
  Political Science\; Vice Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences\; and the
  Director of the East Asian Studies Program. Dean Tsai is also an internat
 ional board member of the Asia Research Institute at the National Universi
 ty of Singapore and the India-China Institute at the New School for Social
  Research in New York. \n\n \n\nDean Tsai's research focuses on the politi
 cal economy of China\, with an emphasis on party-state capitalism\, the su
 rveillance industry and the local developmental impact of reverse migratio
 n in China and India. \n\n \n\nDean Tsai holds a BA in Political Science f
 rom Barnard College\, a Master of International Affairs from Columbia Univ
 ersity's School of International and Public Affairs\, and a PhD in Politic
 al Science from Columbia University. \n\n \n\nAbout the Nardone Family Sem
