Mexico’s ruling party, the Partido Revolucionario Institucional created a new type of citizen in the 1970s: the consumer citizen. In the context of political and economic instability, the political élite passed significant political reform and innovative new economic policy to shore up its support among the middle classes. These included new consumer rights, new forms of consumer credit, and a new tax on consumption. Professor Walker will present her research on these political and economic programs, and discuss the history of Mexico’s emerging middle classes. This seminar is based on the book she co-authored "Latin America's Middle Class".
