Critically Engaging with the News

Wednesday, June 10, 2026 4pm to 5pm

+ 3 dates

  • Wednesday, June 17, 2026 4pm to 5pm
  • Wednesday, June 24, 2026 4pm to 5pm
  • Wednesday, July 1, 2026 4pm to 5pm

How do we engage with the news we read? From social media to published and reviewed articles, news we consume can carry bias, leave out critical parts of stories, or need additional factchecking. In this non-credit course, we will cover 5 different contemporary issues in international news. Students will practice their oral English and reading comprehension skills, think critically about information sources, and identify bias from the author or the author’s institution. This course will give students a framework they can use in the future to critically engage with the news they consume.

Note: This course does not highlight debate on the news, but rather understanding of how news is presented and consumed.
