Title: Falls and Mobility in Special Populations: A Human Factors Perspective

Abstract: Falls are a public and occupational health concern, particularly in special populations such as older adults and individuals affected by physical or cognitive disabilities. Multidisciplinary approaches are needed to understand the problem and to develop effective interventions. In this presentation, I will first summarize our findings on the biomechanics of recovery strategies generated in response to large perturbations, e.g. slips/trips. Then, more recent research directions related to mobility and musculoskeletal injury prevention will be discussed, including: (1) visual field losses and balance/mobility, (2) relationship between attention and gross motor impairments in autism, and (3) anthropometric models in obese adults
