#NUMusicAfro/Canarian Jazz -- Simbeque, featuring Diego Barber
This concert affords the Northeastern and Boston communities the unique opportunity to hear music from the Canary Islands, an archipelago off the coast of northwest Africa. This evening's concert will be the culminating event in a five-day residency at Northeastern by Simbeque, an ensemble based on the island of Tenerife. Joining Simbeque for the performance will be world-renowned, New York City-based guitarist/composer Diego Barber -- a Sunnyside Records artist originally from the island of Lanzarote -- and Professor Mark Lomanno, a pianist and ethnomusicologist currently on faculty at Northeastern who has been working with these musicians and on the Islands since 2009. The concert will feature repertoire from the group's forthcoming second album, Simbeque II -- a mix of traditional Canarian and Afro/Canarian music with jazz improvisation -- some of which will be recorded in Northeastern's Green Line Studios during their residency.
