Title: Introduction to Stylometry WorkshopDate: January 20th, 2019Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 pmLocation: Northeastern University, 422 Snell Library, 376 Huntington Avenue, Boston MA, 02115Please join us for an exciting introduction to stylometry, led by Molly Nebiolo, a PhD student in the History Department. If you like to (or want to) visualize textual data in a new way, this workshop is for you! While an intimidating word at first glance, stylometry is in fact a creative application to see how texts (and authors) are related to one another based on literary style. This workshop is for all levels, but a basic knowledge of R is suggested (but not required!). We will deconstruct how and why stylometry could be useful for textual analysis in English, History, Sociology, and other humanities and social sciences disciplines. The workshop will also be a space to investigate the outputs of stylometric applications.Using your own textual data or the provided test corpus, we will: Analyze results in R and Gephi to see how texts relate to one another in vector space. Determine most-used words in each text to easily compare the writing styles of authors. See how the literary construction of a text compares, page by page, to the writing styles of other authors (or even figure out the author of an anonymous text!). And most of all, create informative and sharp visualizations of your textual data!No previous experience is required but participants should bring their own laptops, if possible. Space is limited, and registration is required. Please RSVP here.
