Meet the Author: Seng Ty
Seng Ty tells of his harrowing survival of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia in his memoir The Years of Zero: Coming of Age Under the Khmer Rouge. The Years of Zero follows a seven-year-old Ty on the march from his Phnom Penh suburb into the jungle and an agricultural labor camp. Ty spares the reader no detail as he explains how his mother was worked to death and his siblings starved. He tells of how he survived the starvation, torture, and brainwashing campaigns of Khmer Rouge and went on to escape to a Thai refugee camp.
Seng Ty’s story was featured in the Time Magazine story “Children of War” in January 1982. He has also shared his story on the Phil Donahue show and CBS 60 Minutes. Ty is currently an educator in the Lowell, MA School System.
