The Third Annual Israel Studies Lecture

In his talk, Professor Chaim Gans, a prize-winning Israeli political philosopher, will draw upon his most recent book, A Political Theory for the Jewish People, to outline three competing approaches to Zionism, as well as the different historiographies and conceptions of justice associated with each.  He will also explain how these different approaches to Zionism produce different roadmaps for the future of the relationships between Jews and Palestinians in Israel/Palestine, and between Jews in Israel and world Jewry.

Chaim Gans was educated at the Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, and Oxford University.  He recently retired from his post at Tel Aviv University, and he has been a visiting fellow at the Center for Human Values and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University.  He is the author of A Political Theory for the Jewish People (Oxford University Press, 2016); A Just Zionism: On the Morality of the Jewish State (Oxford University Press, 2008); The Limits of Nationalism (Cambridge University Press, 2003); and other books and articles in political, legal and moral theory.  He was awarded the Landau Prize for Academic Excellence in Political Science and International Relations, and the Cheshin Prize for Academic Excellence in Law.
