Abstract: Metamaterials are rationally engineered composite artificial structures with exotic properties not easily obtained or altogether unavailable in nature. Since the proof-of-concept experiments in the microwave regime in the early 2000s, the operating wavelength of metamaterials has been quickly pushed from terahertz (THz) to mid-/near-infrared and down to visible, where metamaterials started to interfere with another emerging field of plasmonics.
