Title: “The Influence of Fear Cognitions on Motor Behavior in Low Back Pain”

Low back pain is the second most common reason for a visit to a physician, with direct medical costs exceeding $90 billion per year in the United States alone. While high levels of kinesiophobia (i.e., fear of movement) is a fairly strong predictor of low back pain, there have been very few studies that quantify the effects of kinesiophobia on spine movement.  In this seminar, Dr. Thomas will present data from several of his studies that examine this relationship in clinical back pain as well as experimental back pain populations. He will also provide an overview of his currently funded research on conservative interventions in chronic low back pain.
