Title: RISC-V for Security ResearchSpeaker: Rishiyur S. Nikhil, Ph.D., CTO, Bluespec, Inc.Location: Northeastern University, 805 Columbus Avenue, 655 Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC), Boston, Massachusetts 02120AbstractRISC-V is a recent, open, industrial-strength ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) originating at UC Berkeley but now managed by the RISC-V Foundation (riscv.org), which has over 85 industrial and academic members, including major names in CPUs, servers, mobile systems, storage and networking. The ISA spec is free for anyone to implement. Many open-source implementations and some commercial implementations already exist, and more are on the way, ranging in scale from embedded systems to high-end compute servers. The tool chain (compilers, OS, etc.) is already quite diverse, rich and mature. RISC-V's openness provides a unique opportunity for security-related research: architecture and system analysis, architectural enhancements, and more.In this talk we will provide a brief introduction to RISC-V and its ecosystem, including open-source artefacts available for research, and we will briefly describe the DARPA SHAVE and SSITH security-related projects (in which Bluespec is involved).About the SpeakerRishiyur Nikhil is co-founder and CTO of Bluespec, Inc., and one of the designers of Bluespec's BSV High-Level Hardware Design Language. Previously, he was at Sandburst, Inc. (now part of Broadcom) which focuses on high-performance network router chips. Earlier, he was a researcher at Digital Equipment Corp. and a professor at MIT exploring functional programming languages and high-performance computer architectures. Nowadays he spends all his time having fun with RISC-V.
