Community Courses: God & Government in America - Course #4
God & Government in America with Peter Temes/David Nielson
Beginning with American Indian notions of sacredness and community, continuing through the foundational
speech given by John Winthrop among the Puritans on the deck of the Arbella a day before that ship landed
in 1630 in the Massachusetts Bay, and including a serious look at the presence of religion and divinity in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, this course will offer the chance for close reading and
serious discussion of founding documents and current debates.
God & Government in America will be taught by Dr. Peter Temes and independent scholar David Nielsen on
the evenings of November 13, 21, 28, 29, 30, as well as over lunch on December 1 and 8.
Each course is free and open to the public, and not all are interrelated or cumulative. If you would like to attend all courses, you must RSVP for each separately. Signing up for one does not sign you up for all. We welcome any and all perspectives to the discussion!
