Richard W. Painter
Author and S. Walter Richey Professor of Corporate Law, University of Minnesota Law School
Richard W. Painter, who served as the White House’s chief ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, will deliver Northeastern University School of Law’s commencement address on May 24, 2018. Painter is the S. Walter Richey Professor of Corporate Law at the University of Minnesota Law School and the author of a number of books, including Getting the Government America Deserves: How Ethics Reform Can Make a Difference.
A Republican and an outspoken critic of ethical lapses within the Trump administration, Painter appears frequently on national networks, including MSNBC and CNN, and regularly writes op-eds for The New York Times, The Washington Post and other major papers. In 2017, he joined a high-profile lawsuit against President Trump for violating the Constitution, saying that Trump’s potential for personal gain or loss from the properties and companies he continues to own creates an unconstitutional conflict with his charge to do what is best for the country.
