ABSTRACT: Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States. Although survival rates are improving, these improvements are slow and uneven, with death rates attributable to some cancers remaining unchanged for over 40 years. Part of the difficulty in treating cancer is that tumor cells coopt their surroundings to create an environment conducive to cancer progression. This environment, known as the tumor microenvironment, is just as important to tumor progression as the tumor cells.
