Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global, experiential, research university built on a tradition of engagement with the world, creating a distinctive approach to education and research. Northeastern's faculty scholars pursue use-inspired, interdisciplinary research with a focus on discovering solutions to global challenges in health, security, and sustainability. Our advances in cybersecurity, drug discovery and delivery, healthcare delivery and policy, infrastructure resilience, and urban sustainability are characterized by global collaborations with industry, government, and other academic institutions. The university is home to more than 30 federally funded research centers.
Advancing a new model of higher education that moves beyond the traditional boundaries of place, Northeastern is developing a system of graduate campuses in selected metropolitan centers. The first, in Charlotte, North Carolina, launched in October 2011. Northeastern opened a second graduate campus in Seattle, Washington, in January. These academic hubs offer graduate degrees aligned with their regions' educational, workforce, and economic development needs.
Northeastern is home to a vibrant and competitive athletic program, including 18 varsity sports at the Division I level, 43 club sports, and 32 intramural sports. Athletics at Northeastern promotes leadership, teamwork, outstanding academic and athletic achievement and student engagement with the life of the university and the larger community.
